New in Version 5.1
Version 5.1 of the Official OVAL Schema is a direct result of feedback from the OVAL community. Version 5.1 of the OVAL Language will be a small update that adds a few tests to the component schemas. This will be a minor version change so any change will not invalidate existing content that currently validates against Version 5.0. The changes pending to the OVAL Definition Schema, OVAL System Characteristics Schema, or OVAL Results Schema are outlined below. Refer to the OVAL Language Releases page for all currently available schemas.
An overview of proposed changes for the Version 5.1 Definition Schema, System Characteristics Schema, and Results Schema are outlined below. Links for the new proposed schemas will be posted below once they are available. Refer to the Official OVAL Schemas page for all current schemas.
Version 5.1 of the OVAL Schema will include the following:
- addition of a slackwarepkginfo_test
- addition of an xinetd_test
- addition of new entities to the windows file state
- addition of a FreeBSD portinfo_test
- addition of REG_NONE to the registry type enumeration
- addition of optional comments to individual objects and states
- addition of
- addition of optional comments to individual collected objects
- addition of the OVAL Variables Schema
- fix the type associated with <trustee_sid>
- fix the type associated with
<end> function - make the
<interfaces>element of system info optional - improved Schematron for full/thin results
- added an optional xml signature elements to the
element - added an optional xml signature to the test, object, state, and variable
- addition of an Apache httpd_test
- deprecated the Apache version_test

Status Reports on Version 5.1

[2006-11-06]
Version 5.1 has now been officially released. Thank you to all the members of the community that contributed in supplying ideas and solutions for it.
[2006-10-09]
A draft of version 5.1 is now available. The purpose of this update is to add a couple of new tests and to fix some small outstanding typos. This will be a minor update and will not invalidate existing content, thus it should not require any major reworking of existing tools already compatible with version 5.0.
[2006-06-16]
Version 5.1 is currently in the planning stage. It will be a small update that adds tests to the component schemas, which currently includes a xinetd test to the UNIX component schema and a slackware pkg info test to the Linux component schema. As a minor version change Version 5.1 will not invalidate existing content that currently validates against Version 5.0.
