OVAL Interpreter

The OVAL Interpreter and data files are now hosted on the SourceForge.net Web site at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ovaldi/. SourceForge provides the OVAL Community with enhanced access to the OVAL Interpreter, its source code, and related documentation (read announcement).

The OVAL Interpreter is a freely available reference implementation created to show how information can be collected from a computer for testing, to evaluate and carry out the OVAL Definitions for that platform, and to report the results of the tests. Developed by MITRE to demonstrate the usability of OVAL Definitions and to ensure correct syntax and adherence to the OVAL Schemas by definition writers, it is not a fully functional scanning tool and has a simplistic user interface but running the Interpreter will provide a list of OVAL-IDs and their references (e.g., CVE Identifiers) determined by OVAL to be present on the system.

The OVAL Interpreter Page on SourceForge includes the following:

  • Bug and Feature Request Tracking – enter and track bugs, bug fixes, and new feature requests
  • File Distribution – for all OVAL Interpreter downloads
  • SVN Repository – anonymous, read-only access
  • Wiki - the primary source for information about the OVAL Interpreter
  • Help Forum - for all Interpreter-related email help requests
